Lutheran Hospital hosts first agricultural rescue training for area emergency responders
Stateline Farm Rescue to train Allen County firefighters and paramedics
FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Monday, Aug. 7, 2017) – Part of Lutheran Hospital’s campus will briefly transform this Saturday into a farming environment with a grain bin simulator and auger to learn and practice emergency extraction techniques. Partnering with Lutheran Trauma Center and Allen County Farm Bureau, trainers from Stateline Farm Rescue, an agricultural rescue training agency, will educate roughly 50 first responders with both classroom and hands-on experiences on Aug. 12.
“We’re thrilled to host this agricultural rescue field training for Allen County’s first responders,” said Jeb Sheidler, MPAS, PA-C, ATC, NRP, executive director, Lutheran Trauma Center. “The more familiar medics become with farm equipment and potential injuries that can occur, the more efficient they will be in the rescue process, which will ultimately improve the victim’s outcome.”
The classroom portion will take place in Kachmann Auditorium at Lutheran Hospital from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The hands-on segment will run from 12:30 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Lutheran Medical Group, 7916 W. Jefferson Blvd., located on the south side of the campus.
“Having worked as a firefighter for more than 25 years, I have seen the detriment of farm-related injuries and I applaud all efforts made to lessen the severity of these types of unfortunate incidents,” said Jim Noll, Allen County Fire Academy, District 3 Training Representative and co-organizer of the training.
The four stations each group will rotate through in the afternoon include:
• Grain bin extrications in the simulator
• Grain bin sheet-cutting techniques
• Auger entrapment extrication techniques
• Patient trauma assessment related to farm incidents
Media are invited to the outdoor, hands-on segment at 1 p.m. to see a live “victim” removal from both a grain bin and an auger, as well as patient assessments related to farm-related incidents.
Lutheran Hospital has had Level II adult and pediatric trauma centers verified through the American College of Surgeons since 2009.
